Thailand’s biggest automotive event, the 34th Bangkok International Motor Show took place from March 27 to April 7 under the theme “Street of Automotive Fashion”.

BIMS2013_1sManufacturers these days focus on specific details of not only the technology, but also the interior and exterior design of the vehicles. And this fashion of designing is one of the key factors that will direct future car market. ‘Fashion’ is selected as the theme of the event because it is universal and certainly compatible with every company.

BIMS2013_9sBIMS is the only motor show in Thailand that is scheduled in the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufactures (Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles – OICA) calendar. It is getting bigger and bigger year by year with increasing numbers of exhibitors and visitors.

BIMS2013_14sGrand Prix Group, the organizer of BIMS is seeking opportunities to organize automotive exhibitions in the ASEAN nations and hopes to become the leader of the industry in the region. Recently, the group had a chance to assist and co-host a major motor show in Laos.

BIMS2013_4sLast year was a golden year for the Thai auto industry, thanks to the first car buyer scheme initiated by the government that helped total car sales reach 1.4 million units. Only during last year`s motor show the sale volume of 57.000 units was achieved. Organizers and car distributors this year expected a bit less, as the support scheme for the first car buyers ended, but even under such circumstances 40.834 units were sold.

BIMS2013_5sThis year, 36 automakers and 7 motorcycle companies have confirmed their participation, and more than 230 auto accessories brands displayed their products.

BIMS2013_2sFord hosted ASEAN debut of the all-new EcoSport at the Bangkok Motor Show. The sporty, compact SUV is equipped with a 1.5-liter Ti-VCT petrol engine and features Ford SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system. Ford has showcased its top-of-the-line model, the EcoSport Titanium. Painted in distinctive Mars Red, the EcoSport Titanium is fitted with a sunroof, 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels and a chrome grille. For ASEAN, the EcoSport will be built at the company’s new state-of-the-art $450 million Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) facility in Rayong.

BIMS2013_10sMitsubishi presented in a lineup of 23 concept and Thai-built models, the MITSUBISHI Concept GR-HEV, a sport utility truck powered by a diesel-hybrid drivetrain, featuring 2.5 litre Mitsubishi Clean Diesel engine and a front-mounted electric motor, mated to an automatic gearbox – all controlled by an electronic operating system – as well as a battery pack located (and protected) within the ladder frame. This combination can also provide pure electric power on demand with available AC supply (100V~240V), to replace a generator or to allow the use of a 100V winch for instance, as well as the ability to drive over short distances in pure-electric mode. Concept GR-HEV also uses Mitsubishi’s renowned full-time 4WD technology, featuring Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system to deliver high stability traction and driving performance under all road conditions.

BIMS2013_7sGreat Wall Motors, China’s largest manufacturer of SUV and pickup cars, exhibited its Haval brand for the first time at the Bangkok International Motor Show. They also introduced a mega investment project of over 10 billion Baht (around 300 million USD) to build up a maufacturing plant in Thailand to supply ASEAN market. Haval has become a world leading SUV brand and produced the highest sales volume in China for ten consecutive years. It exported to more than 80 countries worldwide, among others to Russia, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Italy. By having achieved the 6th overall rank in the famous Dakar Rally twice (2012 and 2013) with renowned Carlos Souza of Portugal at the wheel, this event laid a solid foundation for the worldwide awareness of Haval.

BIMS2013_12s_At the exhibition the Haval focused on the presentation of innovations and advanced technologies related to SUVs by presenting 5 models with 3 different engines, among those one concept vehicle as well. Haval E, a fashionable Hybrid SUV is equipped with the Great Wall new generation hybrid drivetrain and solar battery generating system, providing a total output of 180 kW. In pure electric mode it can drive up to 80 km with maximum speed of 130 km/h. When the 1.3-litre petrol engine is also function, the vehicle can reach the speed of 190 km/h.

BIMS2013_8sAnother highlight of the company in Bangkok was a small urban SUV, the 4×2 drive Haval M4 with a 1.5 litre engine of power 75 kW.

BIMS2013_13sThe 34th Bangkok International Motor Show was an extremely colorful event. During ten days of exhibition, the show boasted some fifty different automobile related events, also. Drift and offroad competitions, tuning show and car club gatherings were amongst the most spectacular side events. One of the delightful touches of the Bangkok Motor show are always the show girls. Sometimes you tend to forget that it’s a motor show and not a beauty pageant, by the way the pretty presenters have their own contest.
